The 4 M’s important in life (The Venerable Royce Thompson, CMCA Chaplain – CMCA Magazine,
Vol.37 No.10)

This is an extract from the article written by the Venerable Royce Thompson, and I found it is
important at any age, but particularly as the years go on in our life.

The 4 Ms important in life, especially as we mature in life – maintain your mind, be mobile and
active, pause and meditate, and use the money we have consciously and wisely.

Keep your Mind Sharp

Everyone has moments of memory lapses. Age alone is not the cause of memory or cognitive
decline. Studies have shown that we can reduce cognitive decline and with good health habits like
staying physically active, getting enough sleep, not smoking, limiting alcohol, having good social
connections, engaging in mind stimulating games and brain training apps, as well as eating a
Mediterranean-style diet.

Being Mobile and Active

Mobility is one of the keys to a life lived well. There is a saying – move it or lose it. Regular aerobic
exercise and movement provides many benefits, including stamina, strength, stress release, better
immune function and growth of neural cells and brain health.

An active and healthy lifestyle is one of the best protectors of our present and future lives. Making
small changes now can rapidly improve your quality of life in later life.

Meditation and Gratitude

It is vital in our life journey to pause and meditate with gratitude for our lives, give thanks, and focus
on things that money cannot buy such as family, friends, health, charity, and fun.

Psychologist Robert Emmons (Uni California) and Michael McCullough (Uni Miami) report that
people who express gratitude and count their blessings have a more positive outlook in life, exercise
more, report fewer symptoms of illness, and are more likely to help others.

Use Money Wisely

Most people can now expect to live well into their 80s and the average person will spend more than
a quarter of their lifetime retired.

The big question – “will I have enough money to live on and be able to pay for medical care and fund
a good retirement lifestyle?”

The love of money has been described as “the root of all evil”. Money is nothing more than a
medium of exchange. It is how we handle our money that matters.

Money can’t buy happiness but freedom and the power to pursue our dreams can go a long way
towards happiness. Often people do not express gratitude for what they have and instead search for
more; putting work and money before the mind, mobility and meditation, which is like sitting on a
four-legged stool with 3 broken legs.

From the words of The Venerable Royce Thompson, “In more than 47 years of ministry, I have been
with many people in the last moments of their lives. Never has anyone ever said they regretted that
they had not spent more time at work or made more money”.

As we face our future, lets look to the four import Ms: Mind, Mobility, Meditation, and Money.
